Illegal downloading deal is 'crazy and unenforceable'

For years, the music industry has been trying to do something about piracy and it has been asking the internet service providers (ISPs) to join in the fight against illegal downloads.

Up until now, the ISPs have not wanted to be enforcers of intellectual property rights against their own customers, but an agreement has been reached whereby they will send out warning letters to customers who illegally download music.

Singer-songwriter Tom McRae told the BBC's Evan Davis: "The deal is crazy and unenforceable... the record companies have the wrong target and are shooting themselves in the foot."

He added: "They are going after loyal customers, but should be going after download sites... I don't want labels telling my fans they're criminals."
