Churchill's paintings to be auctioned

A selection of paintings by the late Winston Churchill are going to auction as part of a collection of his possessions being sold by Sotheby's.

The collection was owned by Mary Soames who was the last surviving child of the former prime minister.

She inherited the majority of the art he painted as well as photographs and other memorabilia, including a cigar box and a despatch box from his time as secretary of state for the colonies in the 1920s.

It is not the first time a large collection of Churchill memorabilia has gone under the hammer.

A Christies sale in 2010 which included diary entries, letters and even an unsmoked cigar, fetched more than £570,000.
