Friend: 'He was the benchmark for a generation'
Actor Bill Paterson has said he had "no inkling of the seriousness" of Alan Rickman's illness despite visiting him just two weeks ago.
The star died from cancer at the age of 69. His numerous on-screen roles included the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood, and Professor Snape in the Harry Potter films.
Bill Paterson said Rickman did not have any children of his own, so he supported young people, actors and charities.
