Oscars boycott: Steve McQueen urges 'fair bite' for black stars

Non-white actors and storylines must be given "a fair bite", director Steve McQueen has urged, amid a growing row over the lack of diversity among the Oscars' nominations.

No black or minority actors have been nominated in the four acting categories for the 2016 Academy Awards, with director Spike Lee and actress Jada Pinkett Smith announcing they will boycott the ceremony.

McQueen, whose film 12 Years a Slave won Best Film and Best Supporting Actress for Lupita Nyong'o in 2014, told the BBC that success such as his proved the problem was not a lack of audience.

"It's about executives...giving those storylines and those actors a fair bite," he said.
