Stafford Hospital scandal: NHS boss faces questions from MPs

The head of the NHS in England has admitted patients were not the priority during the scandal at the Mid Staffordshire NHS Trust, which led to the unnecessary deaths of hundreds of patients.

Sir David Nicholson has been under pressure to resign since last month's public inquiry which said there had been years of abuse and neglect at Stafford Hospital.

He was head of the health authority that oversaw the hospital for 10 months in 2005 and 2006 at the height of the failings in care.

He told a committee of MPs he was "absolutely determined" to carry on leading the health service.
