Antimicrobial resistance poses 'catastrophic threat'

Urgent action is needed to tackle the "catastrophic threat" of antimicrobial resistance according to England's chief medical officer.

Professor Dame Sally Davies said in the worst case scenario patients could die from infections picked up during minor surgery.

She said diseases were constantly emerging or becoming drug-resistant, but there was a "discovery void" in the development of medicines.
