Prime Minister Cameron defends nurse training plan

The government has defended its plan to improve patient care by making trainee nurses spend a year working as health care assistants, after nurses' leaders described the proposal as "stupid".

Delegates at the Royal College of Nursing's annual conference also heard how nurses were over-stretched by low staffing levels.

David Cameron and Heath Secretary Jeremy Hunt insist that nurses need to understand the basics of the job and focus on providing care for patients.
