Milestone study probes cancer origin

Scientists are reporting a milestone for cancer research. In the largest ever analysis of cancer genomes they have identified 21 of the genetic mutations that can turn healthy tissue into tumours.

There are more than 200 types of cancer.

On average 890 people are diagnosed with cancer every day in the UK.

It is hoped that by understanding the genetic signatures left behind by cancers, better treatments can be developed.

David Shukman reports.
