Sepsis treatment 'can save lives', says ombudsman

Doctors must do more to save the lives of patients with sepsis, a report by the Health Service Ombudsman says.

In the UK around 37,000 people are estimated to die of the condition every year, which is caused when the body's immune system overreacts to infection. The report found significant failings in its treatment.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence will produce guidance for GPs and clinicians to help them recognise sepsis at an early stage.
