Cancer drugs fund: 'I simply stayed alive'

Cancer patient Steve Evans told the BBC he welcomed a move to extend the Cancer Drugs Fund in England, saying "second-line" drugs had improved his quality of life, as well as helping him to live longer.

Speaking to BBC Breakfast's Louise Minchin and Charlie Stayt, he said: "For me, what's important is the facility for someone to make that decision quickly; where the money comes from isn't really relevant for cancer patients."

"When you're told you have cancer it's quite terrible.... can you imagine what would happen if somebody said 'well, there is a treatment but you can't have it'?"

He said that he had had a very bad last three weeks, but "the miracle of the NHS" had saved his life.

He said his bleeding tumour had been treated by geniuses but he had now entered "the last phase of the journey".
