GP Clare Gerada: NHS 'should not be designed around A&E'

A leading GP has warned against designing the health service around the emergency department, following plans by the NHS to create a two-tier A&E system.

Royal College of GPs chairwoman, Dr Clare Gerada, told the BBC a "holistic approach" was needed.

The review by NHS England suggests the biggest 40 to 70 units - specialising in heart attacks, strokes and trauma - be called major emergency centres.

It would leave the remaining 70 to 100 A&Es - known as emergency centres - to deal with less serious conditions.
