Baker: GP funding 'has fallen for three consecutive years'

Millions of patients in England wait a week or longer to be seen by their GP surgery, official NHS figures reveal.

Maureen Baker, chair of The Royal College of General Practitioners told the Today programme that "funding [for GPs] has fallen for three consecutive years in cash terms".

She added: "It's just not possible to ask doctors who are already tired and struggling to work longer - it's not safe."

Asked about whether practices could be more accommodating to patients, Ms Baker said that many already "do their best to have flexible hours".

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Tuesday 24 December 2013.
