Dr Campbell Cowan, chair of NICE's Guidelines Development Group, told the Today programme that blood-thinning drugs known as anticoagulants would be a better alternative for the "vast majority" of people.
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Wednesday 18 June.
