A new genetics project "will bring in a revolution" in the diagnosis and treatment of inherited disease, according to Prof Graeme Black, who will lead it in Manchester.

Under the NHS scheme, 11 Genomics Medicine Centres are being set up in English hospitals to gather DNA samples from 100,000 people within three years.

Comparing variations in genetic code will allow targeted medicines to be developed to treat cancer and rare diseases.

Prof Black told BBC News it would "ensure that more people access more treatments quicker".
