Why are hospital A&E departments struggling?

The head of the NHS in England says hospitals are facing the highest ever number of ambulance calls and A&E attendances in the service's history. And that is combined with the worst recorded waiting times in accident and emergency for ten years.

Increased numbers of people arriving at A&E and problems freeing up beds are putting pressure on hospitals.
