Warning that A&E is only for emergencies due to fear of surge

NHS England has urged people to attend accident and emergency units, only if it is "absolutely necessary" during the rest of the Christmas period.

Its national clinical director for acute care, Dr Keith Willett, has recommended that those feeling unwell should use a pharmacist as a first point of contact.
