Diabetes Type 2: How gastric surgery can 'cure' patients

Treating Type 2 diabetes costs the NHS up to £10bn a year, but a leading doctor at Kings College London believes there is a way to cut back on costs.

Professor Francesco Rubino says bariatric surgery is the "closest thing to a cure" and should be given to more patients who are not responding to medication.

Just 1% of those who are eligible under obesity guidelines, external access surgery.

Professor Rubino would like to see the guidelines widened to also include Type 2 patients who are not obese, but might benefit.
