England covid tier rules: what are the rules?

Every part of England has been placed in a tier in order to reduce the spread of coronavirus.

The system was introduced after lockdown 2.0 ended on 2 December.

Each tier represents a different level of restrictions - tier 1 being the least strict and tier 3 being the most.

Decisions about which tier an area is in are reviewed every two weeks though changes have been made sooner than that if there is a need to do so.

The BBC's Health Correspondent Laura Foster uses cake to explain what can and can't be done under the restrictions.
