From the BBC vault: Nixon's ghost in 1976 campaign

While reporting at the 1976 Republican convention, the BBC's David Dimbleby notes the striking absence of Richard Nixon, who had won the previous election in a landslide.

Just two year earlier Mr Nixon resigned the presidency amid the Watergate scandal, and then-Vice President Gerald Ford took over the top job. When Ford ran for a second term, Republicans sought to distance themselves from the Watergate scandal and from Richard Nixon, their once-popular president.
