Historic caves of China digitally reconstructed

The growth of the middle classes in China and other emerging economies has led to an enormous increase in the number of people travelling on holiday.

That rise in tourism has in turn put pressure on historic sites around Asia. One solution has been to digitally recreate the sites so visitors can experience their beauty without damaging the originals.

Professor Jeffrey Shaw of the City University of Hong Kong gives a tour of Pure Land - a digital reconstruction of one of the historic caves of Dunhuang in China.

Prof Shaw and his team at the Applied Laboratory For Interactive Visualization Embodiment created the virtual environment using laser mapping and high-resolution imagery.
