Stirling Prize: Inside Park Hill Phase 1

Six buildings have made the shortlist of this year's Royal Institute of British Architects' Stirling Prize, considered one of the top accolades in the world of architecture. The awards are for buildings with original and imaginative designs, which meet the needs of their users.

One of those on the shortlist is the redeveloped Park Hill estate in Sheffield.

Originally built in the late 1950s, this concrete housing block was once notorious for crime, drugs and deprivation. But two firms of architects - Hawkins/Brown and Studio Egret West - are working with developers Urban Splash to bring the estate back to life.

The first phase of the redevelopment is complete, with the architects increasing the amount of glazing and removing walls to increase the amount of light. The facades have also been improved with the addition of vibrant coloured panels.
