Stirling Prize: Inside Astley Castle

Six buildings have made the shortlist of this year's Royal Institute of British Architects' Stirling Prize, considered one of the top accolades in the world of architecture. The awards are for buildings with original and imaginative designs, which meet the needs of their users.

One of those on the shortlist is Astley Castle in Warwickshire.

This 12th Century fortified manor was damaged by fire in 1978 and had fallen into disrepair. But rather than attempt a painstaking brick-by-brick restoration, architects Witherford Watson Mann and clients the Landmark Trust took an innovative approach to create a building suitable for 21st Century guests to stay in.

The scheme combines many of the historic features of the building with new bedrooms, bathrooms and communal spaces.
