President Kennedy given gift of Russian puppy

In June 1961 Nikita Khrushchev and John F Kennedy held a historic summit in Vienna.

Shortly after these talks, the Soviet leader sent an unusual gift to the US president - a puppy called Pushinka.

The mother of the fluffy white mongrel was Strelka, one of the first dogs to survive a trip into space, where she orbited the Earth.

This film shows Pushinka, complete with her passport, outside the White House with another of the Kennedy family's dogs, Charlie. They later had four puppies together.
