Katarina Witt recalls her Winter Olympic figure-skating victory

At the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, two of the world's top figure skaters clashed in dramatic style.

In an incredible coincidence, East Germany's Katarina Witt and Debi Thomas of the US both danced the part of Carmen - the Spanish gypsy immortalised in Bizet's opera.

Katarina Witt recalls how she beat her Cold War rival to win gold in the contest that became known as the "Battle of the Carmens".

Witness is a World Service radio programme of the stories of our times told by the people who were there.
