The perils of life for India's single women

India's women have been in the news for all the wrong reasons recently, after a spate of horrific, well-publicised rapes.

Ordinary life for women in India has been less well documented.

The BBC's Rupa Jha has been hearing the experiences of one young, single woman living in the city of Mumbai.

She discovers that women are considered to be beyond marriageable age at just 23 - and finds out about the social pressures facing Suruchi Sharma, who's still not married at 28.

Suruchi is in a high income bracket - but can't find a landlord who's prepared to rent a property to an unattached female like herself.

Rupa Jha's documentary about single women in India will be shown on Our World on BBC News Channel on Saturday 8 March 2014.
