The bakery offering a therapeutic way back to work

With tasty treats like artisan breads, pizzas and toasted focaccias, one creative North London bakery doubles as a project for people recovering from mental ill health.

The trainee bakers learn how to make all kinds of breads and they are encouraged to talk while they work. It isn't counselling, but it is therapy of a different kind.

"It's about moving people closer to employment," says Mark Canally, one of the coordinators. "Sometimes people have been out of work for a long time and need a stepping stone to get back on track."

The bakery is a social enterprise run by the Centre for Better Health. "Depression just encourages me into my cocoon," says Serena, one of the trainees. "Coming here gets me out of that rut and makes me feel glad to be alive."
