Museum of the Year shortlist: The Tower of London

In 2014, as part of the World War One commemorations, 888,246 individual ceramic poppies were placed in the moat around the Tower of London.

Each poppy represented a member of the British and Commonwealth forces who had died in the war.

The installation was the work of ceramic artist Paul Cummins. Along with 300 other people Paul spent hours in the studio producing the flowers - each of which was made by hand. While rolling clay for the petal he crushed his hand, resulting in the loss of one of his fingers.

Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red attracted over five million visitors, becoming the defining image of the centenary remembrance.

After the installation, the Tower of London was shortlisted for The Art Fund Prize for Museum of the Year 2015, which will be awarded on 1 July.
