Charleston mayor: 'Every heart broken'
Mayor Joseph Riley Jr has been the mayor of Charleston since 1975. For 40 years he has focused on helping Charleston heal from the wounds of slavery.
The shooting death of nine black churchgoers came as Riley was preparing to retire.
He spoke to the BBC about the character of the city and how he feels about the alleged shooter.
