'I won Great Britain's first Paralympic gold medal'

After the Second World War, neurologists at the spinal injuries unit at Stoke Mandeville Hospital began to use sport as part of their patient rehabilitation programmes.

Similar programmes were adopted across the country, and competitions were held between hospitals.

In September 1960, the International Stoke Mandeville Games was held at the same site as the Olympic Games in Rome. These games are now known as the first Paralympic Games.

Margaret Maughan was a member of the British team invited to take part, and competed in the archery event.

She spoke to Witness about winning Great Britain's first Paralympic gold medal.
