Meet the World Cup's first transgender football player

Jaiyah Saelua is the world's first transgender footballer to play in a men's World Cup qualifying match.

The team she plays for, American Samoa, were once the world's worst ranked team.

In 2001, the squad lost 31-0 to Australia.

A new documentary about the team, Next Goal Wins, follows the players as they try to qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Jaiyah describes herself as one of the island's Fa'afafine - an integral part of traditional Samoan culture, born biologically male but having both masculine and feminine gender traits.

Speaking to Newsbeat's Steve Holden, Jaiyah talks about making history, facing prejudice and playing for the "world's worst team".

Next Goal Wins is open in selected cinemas now.
