Plans will be revealed by the government this week that could result in the biggest sale of public land in England since World War II.

It would see the responsibility for managing huge swathes of woodland and forest pass from the state into private hands. Scotland and Wales have already ruled out privatisation of their woodland.

One hundred leading public figures have signed a letter in the Sunday Telegraph opposing the sale.
