GM crops can create 'sustainable source of fish oil'

An application to conduct field trials of a genetically modified crop containing Omega-3 fatty acids normally found in oily fish has been submitted.

If approved by the government, the trials could begin at Rothamsted Research agricultural institute in Harpenden, Hertfordshire, this year.

Lead researcher Prof Johnathan Napier told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that the aim of the trials would be to create a "sustainable source of fish oils" by engineering Camelina sativa (false flax) plants to produce them.

Asked about the potential for a public backlash on the issue, he explained that he was "interested in having a dialogue" about the benefits of the research.
