Month at sea probes Arctic mixing
A team of 18 oceanographers has been gathering evidence of how wind-driven turbulence in the Arctic Ocean is stirring up heat from the depths.
The ArcticMix, external expedition spent a month in and around the Beaufort Sea gathering various types of data.
This summer saw the fourth-lowest sea-ice minimum on record in the Arctic, but despite there being less ice than usual the team encountered various types of wildlife along their journey.
In their detailed measures of ocean turbulence, the researchers - led by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography - detected heat rising from below the surface that matched what was arriving from the autumn sun.
