Professor Dawkins discusses the future of evolution

It is 40 years since evolutionary biologist, Richard Dawkins, put forward his theory that the gene - and not the species or the individual - is what drives evolution and natural selection.

Since then, there have been dramatic advances in our understanding of genetics. Gene editing could now hold the answers to curing disease.

Professor Dawkins expressed his concern to BBC Radio 4 Today's John Humphrys, that the technology could be used to circumvent evolution:

"We're more suspicious of trying to breed a brilliant musician than we are of forcing a child to do five-finger exercises for many hours per day."
