Do smartphones need a hunting rifle emoji?

A gun-control campaign group has objected to the inclusion of a hunting rifle in the latest proposed list of new official emojis.

The Unicode Consortium - which represents many of the tech giants - included the weapon in its next batch of suggested chat message, external graphics, to be released next year.

The group maintains the list to ensure the different makes of smartphones can recognise symbols sent by each other.
