Scotland welcomes the Pope on visit to Britain

Pope Benedict XVI has begun a four-day historic visit to Britain.

He flew in to the Scottish capital Edinburgh where he was welcomed by Queen Elizabeth at the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

The Pope said he wanted to extend a hand of friendship to the whole of the UK but he sounded a warning too against what he called aggressive forms of secularism.

On his journey to Scotland the Pope admitted the church had not been vigilant enough against child abuse.

Nicholas Witchell reports.
