Disgraced MP jailed for 18 months

The former Labour MP David Chaytor has been jailed for 18 months for making fraudulent expenses claims.

His lawyer told the court that he is a "broken man" and asked for a suspended sentence.

But the judge, Mr Justice Saunders, said "these false claims were made in breach of the high degree of trust placed in MPs to only make legitimate claims".

Andrew Porter from the Daily Telegraph, which first reported the MPs' expenses claims, told the BBC it was one of the most serious cases they had uncovered.

Mr Chaytor is the first politician to be convicted over the expenses scandal. Mike Sergeant reports.
