Police defend response to riots

Senior police officers have robustly defended their response to the riots following criticism from the prime minister on Thursday that their tactics were wrong.

After a meeting of the emergency committee Cobra, Sir Hugh Orde said frontline officers had behaved "magnificently" and, although denying a rift between policemen and politicians, stressed it was police who made tactical decisions, not MPs.
