NoW reporters 'routinely hacked' voicemails

A former News of the World journalist has defended the practice of phone hacking at the newspaper.

Paul McMullan told the Leveson Inquiry that it was an "acceptable tool to get to the truth", adding that both former editors Rebekah Brooks and Andy Coulson, who deny knowledge of hacking, were aware of it.

He also spoke about how he loved chasing celebrities in fast cars and how he had rang David Beckham's mobile, with the intention of hacking into his voicemails.

Ross Hawkins reports from the inquiry in central London.
