Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams to resign

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, has announced he will step down at the end of this year to take up a post at Cambridge University.

Dr Williams said it had been an immense privilege to serve as Archbishop of Canterbury and that moving on had not been an easy decision.

He has been the spiritual leader of the Anglican communion during a turbulent time as the church grappled with issues like gay bishops, women and same-sex unions.

The BBC's Robert Pigott reports.
