Charity tax relief donations fear

The Charities Aid Foundation says there is "widespread alarm" at proposals to cap tax relief on donations, saying more than 2,200 organisations have joined its campaign against the plans.

At present, higher rate tax payers can donate unlimited amounts of money to charity, and offset it against their tax bill to effectively bring the amount of tax they pay down to zero.

The Foundation's John Low told the BBC charities relied on "generous, wealthy, philanthropists" who were now being branded "tax dodgers".
