Diamond Jubilee: The Queen arrives for her coronation in 1953

Queen Elizabeth II was crowned in a ceremony at Westminster Abbey on 2 June 1953.

Over 20 million Britons watched the BBC coverage of the coronation, which was also broadcast widely overseas.

Many people crowded round neighbours' sets to watch television for the first time.

An estimated three million people lined the streets of London to catch a glimpse of the new monarch as she made her way to and from Buckingham Palace in the golden state coach.

Commentator Mary Hill described the scene as the crowds watch the Queen arrive for the coronation.
