'Darkest day' for Greater Manchester Police

The deaths of two female police officers mark "one of the darkest days in the history of Greater Manchester Police, if not the police service overall", the chief constable of the force has said.

Sir Peter Fahy confirmed that PC Nicola Hughes, 23, and PC Fiona Bone, 32, suffered fatal injuries in an incident in Mottram, Tameside.

He also confirmed that a 29-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the officers' deaths and two previous murders.

Dale Cregan was detained when he walked into Hyde police station a short time after the incident.
