BBC director general 'did not want to pressure staff'

BBC director general George Entwistle has explained to the Commons culture committee why he had not further questioned why a Newsnight investigation into alleged abuse by Jimmy Savile was shelved.

He said he had a determination to observe the separate organisations of news and television and added that he did not want to put unreasonable pressure on the investigation.
