Archbishop of Canterbury: Justin Welby says being nominated was astonishing

The Bishop of Durham, the Right Reverend Justin Welby, has been formally announced as the next Archbishop of Canterbury, succeeding Rowan Williams, who steps down in December after 10 years in the post.

Bishop Welby was educated at Eton and Cambridge University, and spent 11 years in the oil industry before studying theology at Durham.

He was ordained in 1992 and became a bishop only a year ago when he took up the Church of England's fourth most senior post. He will be enthroned at Canterbury Cathedral in March 2013.

Speaking at a press conference, he paid tribute to his predecessor, The Most Reverend Rowan Williams.
