False abuse claims 'a disaster for BBC' says Hewlett

A former resident of a north Wales care home has apologised for making false allegations of sexual abuse against a Conservative politician in a report by the BBC's Newsnight programme.

Steve Messham said a case of mistaken identity had led to peer Lord McAlpine being linked to the historical claims.

Media commentator Steve Hewlett said the latest development was a "disaster for the BBC".
