Highest number of people in work since records began

Almost 30 million people were in work at the end of 2012, the highest total since records began in 1971.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics also showed the number of people out of work fell by 14,000, between October and December 2012, to 2.5 million.

But youth unemployment increased by 11,000, the highest rise for a year.

Hugh Pym reports.
