Arctic Circle training for Royal Marines

Huge oil and gas reserves are being uncovered by melting polar ice-caps, placing greater strategic importance on the Arctic region.

Members of the 3 Commando Brigade are taking part in extensive training in the area, alongside Dutch and Norwegian forces. The servicemen - most of whom saw recent active service in the heat of Afghanistan - are introduced to their new environment with a rite of passage and vital survival exercise.

Royal Marine Gerald Sergeant described the training as one of the reasons he joined the Marines.
