Tony Hall: BBC has to rebuild trust
Tony Hall has started his first day as director general of the BBC, saying he is confident about the future of the corporation.
He returns to the corporation in the wake of the Jimmy Savile sex abuse scandal, which led to the resignation of his predecessor George Entwistle.
Speaking to the Today programme's John Humphrys, Tony Hall, Lord Hall, explained that "the BBC has been though a bad time... so I do think the lessons are being learned".
He went on to say that the BBC has to "re-build trust" and explained that he thought it was important that the BBC "build a sense of team" internally.
He went on to say that it was time to look at how the money the corporation had was spent while keeping in mind the difficult circumstances the country as a whole was facing: "We've got to look at the way we spend all our money... we've got to be able to justify what we spend to the people who are paying for us."
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Tuesday 2 April 2013.
