UK may face power shortages as 10% of energy supply is shut down

About ten per cent of Britain's energy supply will be shut down this month, raising the spectre of power shortages within two years as old plants close before new ones start producing.

But is the prospect of the lights going out real or exaggerated?

As households struggle to pay energy bills, which have doubled since 2004 and could even double again over the next decade, could fuel bills actually decide the next UK general election?
